Lithuania shuts down nuclear reactor in Ignalina
Block No 2, the only operational block at the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania, has been completely shut down in order to undergo scheduled repairs. The reactor is expected to be fixed by September 30 so that the station could be back in full operation in early October.
Within the next two months, Lithuania will have to import 57 percent of electric energy from Russia, Estonia and Scandinavian countries.
On October 12, Lithuanians will come to the national polls to decide at a referendum whether their country should seek permission from the European Union to keep Ignalina running until a new nuclear power station is constructed. Lithuania agreed to close down the station in order to enter the European Union.
Lithuania plans to build a new nuclear power plant together with Latvia, Estonia and Poland by 2015, reports Belapan.
