Lithuania wants to build gas pipe bypassing Russia

Lithuania would like to build a gas pipe Amber that would connect the Baltic states with the EU gas transport system bypassing Russia, informs BelaPAN. Lithuania and Poland sent an appeal for the construction of the Amber gas pipe in the framework of the European Energy networks development programme to the European Commission in April.

The new pipeline is expected to have a capacity of 5 billion cubic meters of gas a year. This should be enough to provide Latvia, Lithuania ad Estonia with gas. The project will cost 600 million euro.

Russian “Gazprom” is Lithuania’s only gas supplier at the moment.
