Lukashenka: $125mn is tears for beer industry
Lukashenka is doubtful over whether it is feasible to attract foreign investors in order to upgrade this country's beer industry. The head of the state believes that it can be retooled without participation of foreign companies. According to Lukashenka, $125 million is needed for the task. "This is tears," Interfax quotes Alexander Lukashenka as saying during a meeting with the government.
The European Radio for Belarus reported earlier that several foreign investors proposed the Belarusian government their services in order to boost the beer-brewing sector. However, no consensus in terms of the vision was reached among the top officials.
Initially, the goverment planned to study the issue in September but had to consult with Lukashenka now.
Domestic brewers are alarmed by the mounting competition from Russia and Ukraine. Officials express worries over the ungrounded import growth, including beers. This causes a negative foreign trade balance.
Heineken, Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH), Detroit Investment Ltd., SABMiller and Group Soufflet are among those investors who are interested to invest in Belarus's beer industry.
