Monument to Prince Vitaut installed in Voranava district
A monument to Vitaut, the Prince of the Great Duchy of Lithuania, was opened on September 23 in the village Peliasa of Voranava district of Hrodna region, informs BelaPAN. The author of the monument - a Lithuanian sculptor Algimantas Sakalauskas - made an oak sculputure more than 6 meters high applying the traditional Lithuanian wood carving technique. The sculptor depicted the Prince as a crowned knight, holding a scepter - a symbol of power - in his left hand, leaning his right arm against the sword. The monument was installed with the help of Lithuanian public association "For Civic Society".
In the beginning of the XX century there was a monument to Vitaut in the village Dubiantsy, which is 3 kilometres away from Peliasa. However, it was decided by the local union of Lithuanians "Gimtsine" that a new monument should be installed in Peliasa as Dubiantsy had been considered non-perspective village.
