"Narodnaya Volya" to be closed before elections?

The editorial staff of “Narodnaya Volya” is trying to find out why the edition has received the fourth warning in a year from the Ministry of Information. As ERB informed earlier, the reason for the warning was titles of articles “KGB knocks out State Control” and “A new corruption scandal in SCC”. It was stated that the information about the State Control Committee discredited the institution and could have a negative effect on its activity.

The Ministry of Information did not ask for the newspaper’s arguments. The deputy editor-in-chief of “Narodnaya Volya” Svyatlana Kalinkina has informed ERB about it.

Kalinkina: "A great number of warnings for no reason means that the Ministry wants to have forcible arguments in case the elections are hard and it is necessary to close independent newspapers”.

According to Kalinkina, the editorial staff is not going to dispute the warning in court.

Let us remind you that the first warning was pronounced to the edition in November 2009. Officials noticed “appeals to extremist activities” in a letter of the edition’s reader Ihar Drako. The newspaper was warned for a wrong calculation of kiosks where it was possible to subscribe for “Narodnaya Volya” in January. The edition received a warning for the publication of Illya Kopyl’s memoirs “Nyabyshyna. War” in May.
