Nasha Niva and ARCHE to use official spelling?

The Belarusian lawmakers have prepared for the second reading the legislation on the rules of the Belarusian punctuation and spelling, Uladzimir Zdanovich, Chairman of the Education and Culture Committee at the House of Representatives said in a statement.
Under the legislation, the rules of the Belarusian spelling should be applied both in the official and unofficial relations. Zdanovich said that people would not be punished for misspelling words.

However, as regards the adverts or newspapers, it will be mandatory to stick to the new official rules. According to Zdanovich, there are two publications -- Nasha Niva and ARCHE -- that use the old traditional spelling dubbed as "Tarashkevitsa".

After the legislation is passed, these two publications will have to obey to the approved rules, the lawmaker said. The new language regulation is likely to affect the web-based publications, too, notes Belapan.
