Navigation system to control public transport in Minsk

The public transport in the Belarusian capital, Minsk will be under the permanent surveillance with the help of a new navigation system effective from January 2008, Valery Shkuratau, Director of the Metropolitan Transport and Communications Co. told the European Radio for Belarus. “A new navigation system will beam the coordinates of the moving vehicles in a real-time mode to the control center where dispatchers can analyze the road situation and control the movement of the vehicles" he said.

The automated system will be manufactured by the Belarusian enterprises. However, the Minsk City Hall is yet to take a formal decision over this project.

Authorities in the Belarusian capital also plan to introduce automated ticket control service. A commission of experts has already been set up at the Minsk City Hall to study various options of this system.

According to the Minski Kurier newspaper, the automatic ticket control systems on the public transport will be implemented in 2009-2010.

At the same time, Valery Shkuratau told the European Radio for Belarus that "this is only a perspective plan. It is still early to talk about it in concrete terms".
