Olympic medals returned to Tsikhan, Dzevyatouski

Belarus' hammer-throwers Vadzim Dzevyatouski and Ivan Tsikhan today had their medals officially returned after they had been cancelled by the International Olympic Committee after the so called 'doping scandal'. On December 11, 2008, the disciplinary commission of the International Olympic Committee ruled to annul the results of the Belarusian athletes at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. IOC said testosterone levels were higher than the allowed standards. Within the next two years, Dzevyatouski and Tsikhan have appealed this decision in Sport Arbitration Court in Switzerland and they have eventually won the case. The medals were returned to them today. But this court battle cost them over $500,000.

In order to cover court fees, the athletes took a loan from a bank. They do not rule out they might begin a new case, seeking compensation in order to pay off the loan.
