Opposition communists to back candidates with party nominations

The Central Committe of the Belarusian Party of Communists on June 1 approved the electoral platform for the parliamentary elections to take place in the fall of 2008. Consolidation of efforts to bring about changes in the society is the bottom-line of the party's electoral message, reports Belapan.

According to Alena Skryhan, a secretary of the party's central committee, their platform is in line with the message of the united opposition represented by the United Pro-Democracy Forces (UDF), which pushes for more public controls over the authorities.

The UDF's single list of candidates includes 19 members of the Party of Communists. They will be selected through the collection of signatures. In addition, they will also be backed by party nominations at the party's congress on August 10.
