Opposition member's election campaign disrupted by 15 days of arrest

Andrei Kasheuski, an activist with the committee which is organizing the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, has been sentenced to 15 days of arrest.  The opposition member was detained in the evening of March 3 in the Metro in Minsk. He was immediately taken to the Leninski District Court, charged with disobedience to a police officer and convicted.

Kasheuski was going to run for a seat at the town council of Zhodzina. Because of the arrest, he will not be able to submit signatures for his nomination as a candidate, Vital Rymasheuski from the Belarusian Christian Democracy told the European Radio for Belarus. Under the law, physical presence of a candidate is needed when nomination signatures are being filed.
