Orthodox court bans Belarusian priest
The Orthodox court today banned the Belarusian priest Aliaksandr Shramko from serving. He was charged with taking part in a public campaign for the revision of the law on religious freedoms, with an on-line conference on the site of Nasha Niva newspaper and with running his blog in the Internet. Shramko belongs to the clergy of a church in Minsk.
According to the court's ruling, the priest has been removed from the church's staff. But Metropolit Filaret will have the final word in the cerdict. The priest was already warned by the church leadership last year, banned him publishing activities and urged him to close his blog.
Trained as a physics teacher, Aliaksandr Shramko previousl worked at a school, distributed newspapers and worked as a cleaner. He is a devoted supporter of the Belarusian language and culture. He was one of the first Orthodox priests in Minsk who held his services in the Belarusian language.
