PACE Bureau to discuss 'Belarus issue' today
The Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today is expected to discuss the 'Belarus issue' which implies a possible return of the special-guest status for the Belarusian parliament at PACE. PACE position is that Belarus should meet certain conditions in order to return the special-guest status. For instance, European parliamentarians demands that Belarus abolish the death penalty.
In June, PACE passed a resolution on Belarus which contained two major issues, with a recommendation for Belarus to introduce a moratorium on the capital punishment being a number one condition for the re-establishment of the special-guest status.
PACE's resolution also stressed that the representatives of the Belarusian opposition should be present in Strasbourg along with the official delegation of the Belarusian parliament.
