Person responsible for ecocatastrophe in Vitsebsk Region is convicted

The person responsible for an ecological catastrophe that took place not far from the village of Bahdanava in Sennetski District in 2006 has been convicted in Belarus. 415 thousand litres of fuel leaked from the oil-pipe belonging to a Russian enterprise “Zapad-Transnefteproduct” into the neighbouring territory at that time. An illegal incut in the oil-pipe made in order to steal diesel oil was discovered there.

The culprit was found a bit later – it was a 28-year-old inhabitant of Orsha. He made the incut together with an accomplice who has not been found yet. The malefactors “sucked” 3 thousand litres of diesel oil out of the incut.

The criminals patched the hole up and disappeared. “The fountain” of diesel oil appeared in the place of their incut a week later.

The court has sentenced the inhabitant of Orsha to 2 years of correctional work and fined him for 7 million roubles. 20% of his wage will be given to the state. The accused also had to pay more than 84 million roubles to compensate for the losses suffered by “Zapad-Transnefteproduct”.
