Police to catch stowaways?

Meanwhile, the government plans to raise public transport fares. Police officers might join trasnport controllers in catching stowaways across the country.

Valey Novik, a deputy director general of the government-owned public transport company Minsktrans, told the European Radio for Belarus that the transport ministry was now in the process of developing this issue.

Valery Novik:
“The transport ministry was ordered to deal with this issue at the national level in order to deploy police officers to assist in ensuring that fares are paid fully on the public transport”.

It is yet to be known whether controllers will be seen together with policemen at bus stops. Novik says this information can't be revealed.

It is not clear either whether ride fares on the public transport in Minsk wil be raised. In late October, Mikalai Verkhavets, the first deputy transport minister, said that the transport ministry was pushing for higher fares on the capital's public transport. He proposed to raise fees by 15-20 percent.
