Polish administration discusses situation of Union of Poles in Belarus

The Polish President Lech Kaczyński is discussing the problem of the Union of Poles in Belarus (UPB) with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski today, on February 15. BelaPAN informs that a briefing will take place after that. According to unofficial information, an urgent meeting connected with the recent events concerning the UPB has been organized in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Let us remind you that the members of the administration of the unofficial UPB headed by Anzhalika Borys were detained in the morning.  Some activists of the union (for example, Ihar Bantsar and Mechyslau Yaskevich) have already been sentenced to five days of arrest for organization of an unauthorized meeting in Hrodna on February 10. The action was organized in support of Ivyanets affiliate of the UPB and its head Teresa Sobal who is accused of taking over the Polish House in Ivyanets.
Anzhalika Borys who had been planning to accept Kaczyński’s invitation and to come to Warsaw this week is also expecting her trial.

Commenting on the situation of the administration of the unofficial Union of Poles in Belarus, the press secretary of the Polish Embassy to Minsk Pavel Marchyk has noted: “If it all takes paces two weeks after the meeting of Foreign Ministers, it can be considered as a response to the negotiations”.
