Prominet historian Valiantsin Rabtsevich dies in Minsk

Valiantsin Rabtsevich, Doctor of History and a world-known numismatics expert, has died in Minsk. Historian Valiantsin Holubeu described Rabtsevich as the founder of the numismatics science in Belarus.

"Basically, he used his personal collection of coins to create a numismatics classroom at the Belarus State University. His book titled "What Do Coins Tell Us? served as a manual for many generations of history sudents at various universities.

His lectures were easy to remember, because they were clear and fun. He was a joyful and sincere person. It is very sad to hear this news...", Holubeu told the European Radio for Belarus.

Rabtsevich became famous in the Soviet times. His book "What Do Coins Tell Us? became a classical work as far back as in 1970s. In early 1990s, he released his new book "The Numismatics of Belarus". In the recent years, Rabtsevich contributed a lot of efforts in returning famous "Vitaut's Belt" back to Belarus.
