Prosecutor General denies rehabilitation to repressed Belarusian poetess

Belarus's Prosecutor General who reviewed the application for rehabilition of Larysa Heniyush, a repressed Belarusian poetess, says he is not empowered to appeal the resolutions of the Presidium of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus. On November 24, 1999 the Supreme Court ruled that Heniyush could not be subject to rehabilitation. The application for rehabilitation was filed with the Office of the Prosecutor General on November 1, 2007 by the Steering Committee for perpetuation of Stalinism repression victims, the Union of the Belarusian Writers and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee. The application was endorsed by over 70 outstanding public figures and intellectuals, including Nil Hilevich, Ales Pashkevich, Ihar Kuzniatsou, Harry Pahaniayla and others, according to the Belarusian Helsinki Committee.
