The quantity of forest fires is twice less this year in comparison with last year
This year the quantity of forest fires was twice less than last year, iven though there was abnormal heat.
Grass and brushwood burned mostly in Brest region in Spring. Peat-bogs burned in Homel and Brest regions. Forest fires took place in Homel, Mahileu and Brest regions.
Attentiveness of citizens also increased. They provided one third of forest fire warnings to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Last year only each 4th fire was reported by citizens. Half of the fires were noticed with the help of fire-rescuing helicopters.
Almost all the fires were extinguished at the initial stage. The area of each fire was less than a hectare. This was informed by the Press-Secretary of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Vital Navitski, to the European Radio for Belarus. The main reason for fires - influence of a man.
Navitski: "Since the beginning of the year there has been 487 forest fires. Their total area amounts to 267 hectares. There also has been 193 fires, total area 46,5 hectares, at the peat-bogs. Grass and brushwood burned 1017 times on 524 hectares".
