Renaming of Lenin Square underground station postponed
The reason is that the composition of the Minsk City Council has changed, reports TUT.BY. The decision to rename the Lenin Square metro station into Independence Square was passed by a special commission at the Minsk City Hall on March 15. The decision was published in the press, with members of the public encouraged to send their comments and suggestions within the next two weeks. Members of the Minsk City Council were expected to pass their decision by early April but failed to do so because their four-year elected term expired after the local elections.
Historian Ivan Satsukevich says mostly veteran organizations and veterans object to the name "Independence Square".
