Lukashenko promises Grybauskaite to register all candidates
While the Lithuanian president has expressed readiness to protect Belarus' interests in the European Union.
Belarus seeks to hold presidential elections not worse than the previous
polls, Alexander Lukashenka said at a news conference after talks with
Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite in Minsk.
Lukashenka is
quoted by Belapan news agency as saying that the Belarusian authorities
are interested in having all potential contenders registered as
candidates. Dalia Grybauskaite said Lukashenka promised her during the
talks that all candidates would be registered and observers would be
present at the polls.
Lithuanian president noted her country was
interested in improving relations with Belarus. The official news agency
Belta reports that Grybauskaite reminded that Lithuania is a EU member
and will take over OSCE's rotating presidency next year. Lithuania
wishes to use this opportunity to help Belarus become more open and
recognized in Europe.
