Scandal: False diplomas issued by Belarus universities

The Minsk Regional Anti-Economic Crime and Corruption Department has busted a criminal ring that sold fake diplomas from Belarus' elite universities. Rumors suggest that a university diploma can be bought for 3-5 thousand US dollars in Belarus. The deal was that a buyer would receive a certificate and the guarantees that he or she would registered in the education ministry's files.

The police have so far detained five people: a staffer at the dean's office of the International Institute of Labor and Social Relations under the Trade Union Federation of Belarus, a professor from the Minsk-based Financial and Economics College, a deputy director of the Esthetic Medicine Center Khinevich & Co and an unemployed woman. This is just the beginning, as big shots are yet to be arrested.

Despite the fact that police operatives do not releave information, it has become known that at least one diploma was officially issued by the Belarusian State Economics University. It means that the criminal ring was rooted inside Belarus' leading economics school.

The question is whether the Ministry of Education is involved, as diplomas are strictly controlled by the ministry.
