Sikorski was in Viskuli to represent Belarus in Brussels

Poland’s foreign minister met his Belarusian counterpart Sergei Martynov at the request of the European Union. Today, he represents the position of the Belarusian authorities in Brussels, Waclaw Radziwinowicz, a political commentator with the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, suggested in an interview with the European Radio for Belarus.

“Mr Sikorski met Mr Martynov at the request of the European Union. This is not a position of Sikorski, Kaczynski or Tusk but the position of the European Union. Even if it is not the case yet, it will definitely be so after the meeting in Brussels on Monday”.

The foreign ministers of EU member states are meeting today in Brussels. Among other issues, the ministers will discuss EU’s policy towards the government in Belarus. Sergei Martynov was not invited to Brussels. Alexander Kozulin as a representative of the opposition was the only person invited from Belarus. In the view of Waclaw Radziwinowicz, Sikorski will represent the official position of Minsk.

“I think that after Friday’s meeting in Viskuli with Martynov, Mr Sikorski will represent the view point of the Belarusian authorities as well as his personal vision of the situation in Belarus. This is his main task at the meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday.

The meeting between Poland’s and Belarus foreign ministers took place on September 12 in Viskuli. The details of the talks have not been revealed.
