State control committee opens 59 corruption cases
The Department of Fiscal Investigations at Belarus's State Contol Committee has opened 59 crimincal cases associated with the corruption of officials, department director Siarhei Baranouski said in an interview with Komsomolskaya pravda v Belarusi. In 2007, 225 criminal corrpution cases were opened, he said.
The State Control Committee also inspected 145 villas which size is over 500 sq. m. In 105 cases, additional income taxes were charged. As a result, over Br157 million were wired to the national budget, and 17 citizens were subjected to administrative prosecution.
The head of the department also said that in January-April 2008 fiscal controllers recovered Br74.9 billion or Br8 billion up against the same period last year.
