State Independence Day is celebrated in Belarus
State Independence Day is celebrated in Belarus today. The Red Army freed Minsk from Nazi invaders on July 3, 1944. Alyaksandr Lukashenka suggested making this day the main state holiday during a referendum in 1996.
Independence Day used to be celebrated on July 27. The BSSR Supreme Court adopted the declaration on the sovereignty of the Belarusian state on that day in 1990. It was a very important step on the way to independence that was proclaimed in 1991.
Belarusian democratic forces traditionally celebrate the Day of Freedom on March 25 – the independence of the Belarusian People’s Republic was proclaimed on that day in 1918.
Holiday events, parades and festivals will be organized all over the country today.
