Steel cover for Chernobyl's nuclear reactor
Ukraine has said it will put a steel cover over the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl in order to prevent possible radiation leakage. The Guardian writes that officials in Kiev have confirmed that a contract has been signed with the French construction company Novarka which will replace the crumbling concrete shelter hastily created back in 1986.
The new structure will be built as an arc 105-meters high and 150 meters long.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has issued $500 million for the implementation of this project. Experts suggest the steel cover could be completed within five and a half years.
