Swedish journalist: EU has let Ukraine down
The European Union has done too little in order to take Ukraine closer to the membership in the EU, writes chief commentator Rol Gustafsson in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. He maintains that neither the Eastern Partnership program nor new realities after the Lisbon Treaty has been passed will help Ukraine on its path to the West.
The commentator reckons that everyone in Europe will start shedding crocodile tears over Ukraine's tragedy and accuse Victor Yushchenko of a weak rule. At the same time, the biggest weakness of the Ukrainian president was the fact that he failed to forsee EU's treason as the latter failed to develop a common position regarding Russia and post-Soviet states, Gustafsson writes.
