Trucks stranded in huge lines at Latvia-Russian border

Over 800 heavy trucks have been stranded at two crossing check points at the Latvia-Russia border.  Many kilometers-long lines at the border between these two countries are a common thing since August last year. Experts maintain the increased trade between the European Union and Russia is the major cause of the lines.

Experts also point to Belarus which introduced transit fees for foreign transporters. As a result, many transport companies from Russia redirected their trucks to Latvia in order to avoid Belarus.

The government of Latvia recently decided to impose a $24 fee for each truck that crosses the border from Russia. This money is planned to be used for improving the border infrustructure between the two countries, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
