UN Committee considers Belarus has broken Sudalenka's rights
UN Human Rights Committee considered that Belarus had violated the right of Homel human rights activist Leanid Sudalenka to elect and be elected, during the parliamentary elections in 2004.
According to Sudalenka, he ran for deputy in Hojniki electoral district. He was not registered because of mistakenly indicated place of employment. He stated in the questionnaire that he was a legal advisor, in accordance with his employment record book, and failed to mention that he was also a Chairman of the city organization "Legal Initiative", as it was a civil position. The human rights activist also explained that the commission had considered the fact he had disseminated leaflets as another reason to refuse him.
Now the State is obliged to provide Sudalenka effective means of legal protection, which includes compensation.
