US condemns Minsk beatings ahead of Putin's visit

The United States have condemned the December 12 beatings in the Belarusian capital Minsk, US State Department spokesman Sean MacCormack said in a statement. He brought an example of youth activist Zmitser Khvedaruk who was beaten and later admitted to a local hospital. MacCormack noted that the beating of Khvedaruk was not accidental and that the young man had been deliberately followed. MacCormack also noted that the leader of the unregistered youth group Malady Front was part of the Belarusian delegation that recently met in Washington with George W. Bush and Condoleeza Rice.

“This incident is one of the episodes in a long-lasting series of repressive acts of the Belarusian authorities against their own citizens," the US State Department spokesman said.

We again call on the Belarusian authorities to refrain from using force against their own people and to ensure the basic human rights together with the freedom pf speech and the freedom of assembly, Sean MacCormack added, writes Nasha Niva newspaper.
