U.S. Department of State makes statement about Parfyankou’s sentence

The U.S. Department of State has made the statement in connection with the beginning of trials of participants of the post-election protest action in Minsk on December 19.

"The United States deeply regrets that the government of Belarus has begun the first trial of those detained for their involvement in the Dec. 19 protest. We and many other members of the international community call for the immediate unconditional release of all detainees, we insist that the persecution of independent mass media and the political opposition should be stopped. We are reiterating it today”, - claimed U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner at a briefing in Washington, reports the Russian news service “Voice of America”.

Let us remind you that Vasil Parfyankou, a participant of the square, was sentenced to 4 years in a high security prison yesterday. Furthermore, he will have to pay more than 14 million rubles for the door broken during the Square in the House of the Government. It took one day to consider Parfyankou’s case. Parfyankou partially admitted his guilt – he confirmed that he had taken part in the peaceful protest action in the Square on December 19.
