U.S. extends ease on sanctions against two Belarus companies

The U.S. Department of Treasury has again extended its decision to ease sanctions against two Belarusian enterprises -- Lida-based Lokokraska and Polotsk-based Steklovolokno. The two factories are part of Belneftekhim, the country's petrochemical monopoly. The Belapan news agency reports the sanctions have been suspended until November 30, 2010. However, the assets of these two enterprises on the territory of the United States remain blocked under the government's resolution № 13405. All the other sanctions against Belneftekhim remain in force.

The sanctions were imposed by the U.S. in November 2007 in connection with the human rights violations in Belarus.

On September 5, 2008 the U.S. government eased the economic sanctions against the two enterprises after political prisoner Alexander Kozulin was freed from prison. In February 2009, the decision was extended until June 1 and later until November 30, 2009.
