US Navy missile downs defunct spy satellite
The missile launched from a US warship has successfully brought down a disabled spy satellite, Lenta.ru quotes the official site of the Pentagon as saying.
The satellite was hit 247 km above the Earth, acording to reports.
The debris are expected to burn out completely within the next 24-48 hours.
A decision to shoot down the satellite which lost control hours after the launch was taken because its fuel tank contained a highly toxic substance, hydrozine. If the satellite fell on the Earth, hydrozine could have caused harm to environment and human health.
The Pentagon is expected to provide more details of the operation at the upcoming press conference on February 21.
