US State Department slams Belarus for poor human rights record

The US State Department on March 11 released its annual reports, evaluating the situation with human rights around the world. The Radio Svaboda reports that the section devoted to Belarus contains very critical remarks.  The report said that after few positive steps made by the authoirities in Belarus in 2008, the lack of reforms in 2009 has brought disappointment.

Among other human righghs violations, the report pointed to the kidnappings of opposition activitists and taking them outside the cities, the dispersal of street rallies and beatings of demonstrators, the use of the mandatory military service against opposition members as well as their eviction from universities for political and public activities, the discrimination of people who speak the Belarusian language, etc.
