USA makes statement about detained Vaukavysk entrepreneurs

The USA has urged the Belarusian authorities to guarantee an impartial, open and transparent investigation of the case of Vaukavusk entrepreneurs Yury Lyavonau, Mikalai Autuhovich and Uladzimir Asipenka. It is said in the statement distributed by the US representative office in the OCSE on March 5. "The USA has made it clear that the main term of normalization of American-Belarusian relations is progress in the field of human rights and democracy in Belarus”, - is stressed in the statement.

The document says that the United States welcomed the release of all internationally recognized political prisoners in August 2008 and “other positive steps of the Belarusian authorities” including the return of two independent newspapers in the state system of distribution, the registration of the movement “For Freedom” and the readiness for cooperation with the OSCE in order to improve the Election Code.

"These are positive steps. However, they are limited, - is said in the statement. – We are urging the Belarusian authorities to make further positive steps to make the process irreversible”.
