Why did Yury Kurnenin die?
Kurnenin’s friend and defence partner of Minsk “Dynama” in the 80s Ludas Rumbutis talks about him.
An outstanding Belarusian football player of the 1980s Yury Kurnenin died at the age of 55 last night. He was one of the best fullbacks in the Soviet Union and was called “a small beast” for his tenacity and firmness.
Yury Kurnenin has recently helped Belarus youth national team make it to Europe’s top-8. However, the coach received a wave of criticism instead of support – they said that the team was weak because it had not managed to win any medals. Kurnenin was very anxious about it.
“It is a bolt from the blue for me, - says Kurnenin’s friend and defence partner of Minsk “Dynama” in the 80s Ludas Rumbutis. – Yura was a very vulnerable and self-contained person. The preparation for the European championship took a lot of his efforts. There were misunderstandings and inaccuracies”.
