Will common Russian and Belarusian currency appear by end of year?

Russia and Belarus have elaborated a plan of joint actions in order to introduce their common currency – rouble. The President’s assistant Sergei Prihodko claimed it after a meeting of the Higher State Council of the union state on February 3. According to S.Prihodko, the plan is meant for one year. At the same time he noted that the term of introduction of the common currency should not be appointed in advance.

Let us remind you that nothing is said about the fact that the issue of the common currency was discussed by the leaders of the two states in the official statement of the press service of the Belarusian President.

The idea of introduction of the Russian rouble as a common currency has been discussed by the administration of Russia and Belarus for about 15 years. It had been planned to make the Russian rouble the only means of payment on the territories of these countries on January 1, 2005 and to introduce the union state’s common currency on January 1, 2008. The plan failed due to major disagreement in a number of fields including the creation of a common centre of issue.

By the way, the head of the administration of the National Bank Pyotr Prakapovich answered journalists’ questions about the possibility of introduction of the Russian rouble as a common currency on January 12, 2009. He claimed that the process would take at least two or three years.
