Young oppositionists to observe Ticketless Day monthly
Activists of the youth opposition declared the 17th day of every month as the Hare's Day (Hare is a nickname for ticketless passengers in Belarus). The initiative is spearheaded by the young people who repeatedly participated the protest actions against the abolition of benefits and transport fare discounts for schoolchildren and college students.
Some 150 youngsters on December 17 lined up on a busy street in downtown Minsk, holding their caps and paper tags, saying: "Please help me with some money for a bus ride", "I am asking only for a piece of bread", "Two tickets = a bottle of a kefir (sour yogurt) and others.
Some minutes into the action, police officers came by and asked the youngsters to disperse. The mobbers agreed, but after boarding a trolley-bus they put on hare eares, pulled carrots out from their pockets and rode several stops in this appearance.
In the view of the organizers, the 17th day of every month should become a symbolic day for social protests against the unfair law on abolishing the benefits for students. On this day, students will protest by riding ticketsless and by displaying their discontent with other means, reports Belapan
